Northern Norway is competing to offer the best eHealth solution in Europe

2003.05.19 by Liv Karen Johannessen
The University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) / Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine (NST), in cooperation with the Northern Norwegian Health Network (NH), is taking part in the eHealth Awards competition. The objective is to choose Europe's best eHealth solution. The eHealth Awards (www.e-europeawards.org) will be presented in connection with the High-Level eHealth Conference in Brussels, Belgium, on 22-23 May 2003.

The competition
After the first phase, for which 179 applications were submitted, our application is the only one from Norway among the 30 that have been selected to participate further in the competition. An independent group will judge the competition on the basis of the documentation submitted and a presentation/exhibition during the conference itself. The award will be presented by EU Commissioner Erkki Liikanen.

The Northern Norwegian Health Network (NH)
The solution that UNN/NST and NH have chosen for their application is the Northern Norwegian Health Network and the services available through this regional electronic network. The Northern Norwegian Health Network is a closed network based on internet technology for the health and social-service institutions in Northern Norway. The network includes all the hospitals in the region, all the GP practices and the regional health administration. Key services in the network include a range of telemedical services (dermatology, plastic surgery, ear, nose and throat, photography of the optic fundus, diagnosis of the sounds of the heart, dialysis treatment, radiology) and electronic messages (referrals, case summaries, laboratory results). The health network is flexible, and the capacity and range of services are developed in line with users' needs. What distinguishes the Northern Norwegian Health Network from other eHealth solutions and health network solutions in Europe is the relatively large number of users and the wide range of services offered through the network.

The participants
The University Hospital of North Norway (UNN): UNN is a provider of most telemedical services and a user of electronic messages in its communication with other hospitals and the primary health service.

The Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine (NST): The NST is a department at the UNN, and is a national centre of expertise whose main purpose is to undertake research and development of telemedicine solutions.
