Presentation of the elite centres
The idea of the SFI scheme is to build up or strengthen Norwegian research environments which work in close cooperation with heavyweight innovation clusters. One of the objectives is to strengthen the competitiveness of Norwegian industry.
“It covers everything from oil recovery and stem cell therapy to the development of concrete and telemedicine,” writes ‘Forskning’, which is published by the Research Council of Norway.
Strong North Norwegian environment
Through the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine, the Northern Norway Regional Health Authority is the host institution for the Tromsø Telemedicine Laboratory (TTL). In addition, nine partners are included in the consortium which represents one of the 14 new Centres for Research-Based Innovation in Norway. The other partners in TTL are:
- The University of Tromsø
- Telenor R&D
- IBM R&D in Zurich
- The independent research institute Norut IT in Tromsø
- DIPS in Bodø, which supplies electronic patient record and patient administration systems
- Well Diagnostics in Tromsø
- WPR Medical in Arendal, which develops wireless surveillance and recording of vital medical parameters
- The Northern Norway Regional Health Authority (Helse Nord) ICT
- Norsk Helsenett, the Norwegian health network
The concept also entails opportunities for agreements with large international universities in Munich, Aalborg, Oregon and Berkeley.
The ultimate in research
In an editorial, the magazine ‘Forskning’ presents the 14 new elite centres as follows:
“Together with our 13 Centres of Excellence (SFF, presented in ‘Forskning’ No. 5/02), the SFI centres represent the ultimate in Norwegian research and innovation communities”.
