Telemedk@rt2003 - a survey of telemedicine activities i Norway
At the request of the Norwegian Directorate for Health and Social Welfare,
the NST conducted a survey of telemedicine activities in Norway in 2003. The
work has focused on mapping the status of telemedicine activities in each health
region.
It provides an insight into the historical background, the results of
State measures in information and communications technology and the variation
between the health regions in the use of telemedicine. It also suggests future
challenges in the public health service where telemedicine may be an important
tool. Each health region is presented individually. The telemedicine projects
are shown as tabular summaries outlining the type and number of telemedicine
projects as well as the development phase they have reached. The survey shows
variations - sometimes considerable - between the regions in the use of
telemedicine with respect to both the type and the number of activities.
Although it is only to a minor degree that telemedicine is provided as a routine
service at present, it still appears to be an explicit wish from the regions
(through the strategic plans) to use telemedicine more widely to make it
possible to meet today's challenges in the public health service. The survey
indicates some challenges in health politics, and challenges associated with the
use of telemedicine in the health sector. The departmental head at the NST has a
final word about challenges in the short and the long term. In connection with
the survey, three appendixes are provided: Appendix 1 "Prosjektoversikt"
[Project Summary], a list of the telemedicine projects collected in this survey.
Appendix 2 "Sentrale IKT og Telemedisinmiljø [Central ICT and Telemedicine
Environment]", the community with which NST has been in contact during the
survey period, and Appendix 3 "Prosjektideer [Project Ideas]".
